About Dhanteras(उत्सव माहिती)

Dhanteras (celebrated across Maharashtra as Dhanatrayodashi - धनत्रयोदशी) marks the glorious official opening of the 5-day Diwali festive extravaganza. Occurring on the thirteenth lunar day (Trayodashi) of the dark fortnight (Krishna Paksha) in the sacred month of Kartik, Dhanteras brings celestial blessings of health, material prosperity, and spiritual liberation into homes.

In Maharashtra, the festival unites two deeply revered divine celebrations: the worship of Lord Dhanvantari (the divine physician of the Gods and founder of Ayurveda) and the worship of Goddess Mahalakshmi and Lord Kubera (the celestial treasurer). Homes are illuminated with flickering earthen oil lamps (Panti), fresh marigold garlands (Zendu), and intricate powder Rangolis depicting the auspicious footprints of Goddess Lakshmi entering the house.

Tradition mandates buying auspicious items on this day — particularly gold, silver coins, brass kitchenware, copper utensils, and dry coriander seeds (Dhana / धणे). In every Maharashtrian kitchen, the intoxicating aroma of freshly fried Diwali Faral (Chakli, Karanji, Besan Ladoo, and Chivda) fills the air, signaling the triumphant arrival of the Festival of Lights.

History: The history and mythology of Dhanatrayodashi are linked to two powerful Vedic and Puranic narratives:

1. The Emergence of Lord Dhanvantari from Samudra Manthan: According to the Srimad Bhagavatam, during the cosmic churning of the celestial ocean (Samudra Manthan) by the Devas and Asuras, Lord Dhanvantari appeared on Kartik Krishna Trayodashi carrying the pot of divine nectar (Amrit Kalash) and ancient scriptures of Ayurveda. Hence, Dhanteras is celebrated nationally as National Ayurveda Day.

2. The Legend of King Hima's Son & Yama Deepdan: Astrologers predicted that King Hima's 16-year-old son would die of a fatal snakebite on the fourth day of his marriage. His clever young bride resolved to alter destiny. On the predicted night, she heaped all her gold ornaments and silver coins at the sleeping chamber doorway and lit clay lamps in every corner. She kept her husband awake by narrating heroic stories and singing devotional songs. When Lord Yama, the God of Death, arrived disguised as a venomous serpent, the blinding brilliance of the gold, silver, and lighted oil lamps dazzled his vision. Unable to enter, Yama sat upon the heap of gold listening to the devotional songs through the night and quietly departed at daybreak, sparing the prince's life. In commemoration, the ritual of Yama Deepdan (lighting an oil lamp facing South) was established to protect loved ones from untimely demise (Apmrityu).

Significance: Dhanatrayodashi carries vital spiritual, medical, and socio-economic significance in Maharashtrian culture:
  • Health over Wealth (Arogyam Dhana Sampada): Lord Dhanvantari is honored before wealth deities, reminding humanity that radiant physical and mental health is the true prerequisite for enjoying earthly riches.
  • The Unique Marathi Tradition of Dhana-Gud (धणे आणि गूळ): While buying gold and silver is popular, in traditional Maharashtrian homes, purchasing dry coriander seeds (Dhana) is the foremost sacred duty. Coriander represents seeds of eternal renewal, fertility, and abundance. Offering roasted Dhana with jaggery to Goddess Lakshmi and eating it as prasad ensures perennial financial stability.
  • Protection from Untimely Death (Yama Deepdan): Lighting an earthen or whole-wheat flour lamp filled with mustard/sesame oil outside the house facing South shields the entire household from accidental accidents, severe diseases, and premature death.
  • Auspicious Muhurat for Investments: Pradosh Kaal during Dhanteras is considered astrologically immaculate for starting new commercial ledgers, acquiring residential property, buying vehicles, and investing in gold or silver.
