About Ganesh Chaturthi(उत्सव माहिती)
Ganesh Chaturthi 2026, the most beloved and grand festival of Maharashtra, begins on Monday, September 14, and concludes with the immersion (Visarjan) on Anant Chaturdashi, Wednesday, September 23, 2026. The festival celebrates the birth of Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles and lord of new beginnings.
History: While Ganesh Chaturthi has been celebrated for centuries, it was transformed into a public community festival in 1893 by the nationalist leader Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak. Tilak envisioned Ganesha as a unifying cultural symbol to bring people together, bridging social divisions and fostering nationalist sentiment against British rule.
Significance: In Maharashtra, Ganesh Chaturthi (Ganeshotsav) is celebrated with incomparable enthusiasm. Elaborate clay idols of Ganesha are installed in homes and massive public pandals (such as Mumbai's Lalbaugcha Raja). The festival is marked by daily prayers, cultural programs, and vibrant public processions.
Rituals & How to Celebrate
Pranpratishtha: Consecrating the clay idol with Vedic mantras and welcome offerings.
Shodashopachara Puja: The traditional sixteen-step worship offered to Ganesha.
Modak Offering: Presenting Ganesha's favorite sweet, Modaks, along with 21 blades of Durva grass.
Visarjan (Immersion): Bidding farewell to the deity by immersing the idol in water, accompanied by chants of 'Ganpati Bappa Morya'.
