Understanding the 12 Marathi Lunar Months (महत्त्व व पंचांग)
The Marathi Hindu calendar follows the Shalivahana Shaka (शालिवाहन शके) lunisolar system with 12 distinct lunar months. The calendar year begins with Chaitra Shukla Pratipada (Gudi Padwa). Each lunar month comprises two fortnights (Pakshas): the waxing Shukla Paksha (शुक्ल पक्ष) leading to the full moon (Purnima), and the waning Krishna Paksha (कृष्ण पक्ष) culminating in the new moon (Amavasya).
Throughout each month, key spiritual observances include **Ekadashi, Sankashti Chaturthi, and Pradosh Vrat**. Maharashtra's most celebrated festivals—including **Ganeshotsav (Bhadrapad)**, **Ashadhi Ekadashi (Ashadha)**, **Diwali (Ashwin–Kartik)**, and **Navratri (Ashwin)**—are observed according to these traditional lunar month dates.
