Kartik Purnima (celebrated with profound grandeur across Maharashtra as Tripuri Purnima - त्रिपुरी पौर्णिमा or Dev Deepavali - देवदिवाळी) is the most luminous, spiritually sacred full moon of the Hindu calendar. Occurring on the Purnima of the holy month of Kartik, this festival marks the celestial climax of the month-long Kartik vows, the conclusion of Tulsi Vivah ceremonies, and the triumphant celebration of Lord Shiva as Tripurari — the slayer of the cosmic demon Tripurasura.

In Maharashtra, Kartik Purnima is celebrated as the Diwali of the Gods. Across historical temples such as Jejuri Khandoba, Tuljapur Bhavani, Kolhapur Mahalakshmi, Wai, and Trimbakeshwar, the towering stone lamp towers (Deepamalas / दीपस्तंभ) are completely ignited with thousands of flickering oil flames, turning the temple premises into glowing towers of divine light. History: The history and scriptural basis of Tripuri Purnima are described in the Shiva Purana, Linga Purana, and Matsya Purana:

1. The Legend of Tripurasura and Lord Shiva's Cosmic Victory: Three demon brothers — Tarakaksha, Kamalaksha, and Vidyunmali (sons of Tarakasura) — performed severe austerities to propitiate Lord Brahma. They received a formidable boon: Brahma granted them three invincible flying fortresses (made of gold, silver, and iron) known as Tripura. These flying fortresses orbited the cosmos and could only be destroyed when they aligned in a straight line once every thousand years, and solely by a single cosmic arrow. Emboldened by invulnerability, the demons wrought havoc across Earth and the heavenly realms.

The Devas approached Lord Shiva for salvation. Lord Shiva assembled the cosmic chariot: Earth became the chariot, the Sun and Moon its wheels, Lord Brahma the charioteer, Mount Meru the bow, Vasuki the bowstring, and Lord Vishnu the arrow tip (Pashupatastra). On Kartik Shukla Purnima, when the three flying cities aligned in the sky, Lord Shiva released the blazing arrow, instantly annihilating Tripura in cosmic flames and restoring righteousness. The Gods in heaven celebrated with divine fireworks and lit thousands of oil lamps, naming the day Dev Deepavali and hailing Shiva as Tripurantaka or Tripurari.

2. Matsya Avatar & Sikh Guru Nanak Gurpurab: On this day, Lord Vishnu manifested as the colossal Matsya Avatar to rescue King Manu, the Saptarshis, and the sacred Vedas from the cosmic deluge (Pralaya). It is also the auspicious Gurpurab celebrating the birth of Guru Nanak Dev Ji.
